Eagerly Desire the Spiritual Gifts

Eagerly Desire the Spiritual Gifts

“Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” 1 Corinthians 14:1

I had it on my heart to encourage everyone who believes in Jesus that it’s okay to desire the gifts of the Spirit. Forget what other people have said about them or how others may have abused them. Look at the prompting of God’s word and follow it. Receiving Jesus does not go without the gifts of His Spirit. To abandon them would be to quench the Holy Spirit or even deny Him. Therefore, hold nothing back. Desire the signs and wonders He wishes to manifest through all who believe.

“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well” – Mark 16:17-18

God desires to work through every believer with signs and wonders following them. It’s not just a preacher on a pulpit, a worship team that sounds cool, or a pope in a fancy robe. It’s all those who believe: the business owner, the barista, the server, the janitor, the actor, the homeless man, EVERYONE who believes. By no means should an experience or circumstance hold back your desire of the Spiritual gifts that were meant to follow you.

“grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,  while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Acts 4:29-30

If we let anything turn our desire off from the gifts of the Spirit, we turn off everything the gifts were meant for. A sign is meant to show off who God is. A wonder is meant to spark the desire for Him. As we bring the gospel of Jesus to the world, what good is it if it does not consist of power? This is why we see God confirming his word with signs and wonders following those who believe. “And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed” (Mark 16:20).

A huge reason why some may have abused the gifts of the Spirit, is because they did more than desire it; they pursued it. The scripture I first quoted is very clear. PURSUE love and DESIRE the gifts. To make the gifts our pursuit is nothing more than to seek our own gain and is far from love. But while love is the pursuit, the gifts of His Spirit should always be our desire.
