Guess What New Thing We Did! [Bite Size Theology Update]

Happy Saint Swithin’s Day, everyone! As you all know, I (Sage) was out last week doing a bit of traveling and (unsuccessfully) interviewing for jobs. It’s good to be back. I hope you all enjoyed Evan subbing in for me on the Extended Edition last Friday as much as I did. Week 1 (7/15-7/19):

Monday 7/15: Childlike Faith

At this point in his ministry, Jesus had healed a significant number of people and many were bringing him their sick and lame. But in Mark chapter 10, we also see people bringing Jesus their children for him to lay hands on them and pray for them. The disciples rebuke them and try to send the children away at first. But Jesus responds by saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

This might seem like a simple and straightforward teaching, but it has a lot of practical implications for us. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God like a child? And why would Jesus go as far as saying “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it?”

The interesting thing about the relationship between parent and child is that it’s almost a microcosm of what our relationship is like between God and us. That doesn’t mean it’s a perfect picture of what it’s like. Even just the word “father” probably comes with all sorts of baggage and comparisons with our own parents that may be broken and painful. But this Father, our heavenly Father, is generous and faithful in a way that none of our fallible earthly parents ever could be. And even looking at a healthy relationship between earthly parents and their children can give us a lot of insight and perspective when it comes to God’s character and who we are in relation to him…

Tuesday 7/16: Protoevangelion

Protoevangelion is a big complicated theological term that refers to something pretty straightforward, but also something profound and beautiful. It’s a Greek word that means, “first good news,” or “first gospel.” And the term specifically refers to Genesis 3:15. Before we read that one verse, we should frame the verse in its context. After God instructs Adam and Eve to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they encounter the serpent in the garden, who calls God’s character into question and urges them to eat it. And in Genesis 3, they eat the fruit, and sin enters into the world for the first time.

And starting in verse eight, we read this: “And [Adam and Eve] heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate”…
