Our Election and God’s Sovereignty

Observing the 2016 presidential election gave my limited brain capacity a much clearer understanding of where we are as a nation. But more disturbing is the place where the Church at large is at. Had I not been alive as long as I have, I might have despaired seeing the anger and fault finding displayed by both sides. But my years on this earth have shown me a few things, including cyclical pendulum shifts politically. If you think things will always be the way they are and that brings you great joy or deep despair, stick around. It will change. The population at large is fickle, I believe, mainly because they are looking for a leader–the kind who will govern with integrity and balance, protecting our freedoms and our citizens.

What we are desiring will one day be fully realized…”and the government will be on His shoulders.” (Isa. 9:6) Yep.

 There’s a song by Natalie Grant called King of the World…she laments:

“When did I forget that You’ve always been the King of the world?

I try to take life back right out of the hands of the King of the world.

How could I make You so small when You’re the One who holds it all?

When did I forget that You’ve always been the King of the world?”

When did we forget? Why did I forget? When did we forget??

We are influenced and allow ourselves to be manipulated by the culture rather than by the Word. Politicians make promises that we strain to believe. We pull for our man or woman and make accusations against the rival, rarely having solid grounds for such accusations. We give it all we have, and when victory we hoped for slips away, our world feels as if it will collapse.

But Who continues holding it all? When did we forget?

I read in Daniel 2 that God “desposes kings and raises up others.” Also, in Proverbs 21, “In the LORD’S hand, the king’s heart is a stream of water that He channels toward all who please Him.”

Take heart, dear brothers and sisters. The world is being firmly held by the One who created it all in the first place. God is still sovereign. We still pray and exercise our responsibility to vote. We will celebrate and we will feel the sting of defeat.  But in it all, let’s not sin. And let not a “bitter root” grow to defile many. And, for goodness sake, let not our hearts be troubled!

Let His Word soak into your concerns.  Continuing in Isaiah, 9:7:

Of the increase of His government and peace

There will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Do I hear an “Amen”?

I believe I hear a corporate sigh of relief.
