Post: Part #7: “Life is going to be easy if you love Jesus.”

Many people assume that faith in Jesus should make life smoother, easier, and less complicated. We may not say it out loud, but somewhere in our hearts we can start to believe that following Jesus should protect us from disappointment, grief, conflict, sickness, financial stress, broken relationships, and hard seasons.

But that is not what Jesus promised.

Jesus did not say, “Follow me, and everything will be flawless.”

He did not say, “Love me, and you will never suffer.”

He did not say, “Believe in me, and your life will become simple.”

In fact, Jesus said almost the opposite. In John 16:33, He told His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

That is honest and hopeful at the same time.

Jesus does not hide the reality of trouble. He does not pretend life will be easy. He tells the truth. There will be tribulation. There will be pain. There will be hardship. There will be days when faith feels costly and obedience feels heavy.

But Jesus also gives us courage.

“Take heart.”

Why?

Because He has overcome the world.

The gospel is not that life becomes perfect when we trust Jesus. The gospel is that in the middle of life’s imperfection, we have a perfect Savior.

A Savior who is present.

A Savior who is faithful.

A Savior who knows suffering from the inside.

Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that Jesus is not a distant Savior who cannot understand our weakness. He was tempted. He suffered. He wept. He was rejected. He carried sorrow. He endured the cross.

That means when we go through pain, we are not alone. Jesus is not watching from a safe distance. He is near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Following Jesus does not exempt us from hard things.

But it does mean hard things do not get the final word.

Romans 8:28 says that “for those who love God all things work together for good.” That does not mean all things are good. Suffering is not good. Sin is not good. Death is not good. But God is so good, so wise, and so powerful that He can work even the hardest things for His redemptive purposes.

So, no, Jesus did not say, “Life is going to be easy if you love Jesus.”

He said something better.

“I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

Life may not be easy.

But Jesus is near.

Life may not be perfect.

But Jesus is faithful.

Life may not go the way we hoped.

But Jesus has overcome the world.

And because He is with us, we can take heart.
