I Will Always Chase Him

There are two things that are sacred at my house: the Lord, Jesus Christ, and baseball. My children will grow-up to know much of both.
I took Adam, my seven-year-old boy, to his first professional baseball game a few weeks ago – it was perfect. Great seats. Great weather. Great hotdogs. Happy father.
After the game, Adam was so excited that he bounded down the stadium steps three at a time. I yelled after him, “Don’t make me chase you!” But I didn’t mean that. I will always chase him.
He’s not my only begotten – but he is my first begotten. I am smitten with him. He has my smile, hair, blue eyes, height, and giggle – in some striking physical ways, God created him in my image.
I feel more certain than ever that God calls fathers to love their sons, like our Father loves all His children. My affection for Adam is an overflow of love first experienced from my Heavenly Father. I know this – “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
So, although I will occasionally shout, “Don’t make me chase you.” I always will. Whether down the steps at the baseball game or to the ends of the earth – I want him to know my love will never stop pursuing his heart.
